The Southern Nevada Water Authority, representing Las Vegas, Henderson, and N. Las Vegas, has applied for 200,000 acre-feet (65 billion gallons) of water to be pump annually from eastern Nevada through 300 miles of pipeline. The estimated cost is $15 billion dollars.

SNWA is maintaining this water removal from these desert valleys will not result in any harm to resident people or wildlife. Independent hydrologists, however, contend that mining and exporting this much water may indeed cause major environmental degradation and destroy the livelihoods of rural residents and tribal communities in eastern Nevada and western Utah.

The proposed pumping would involve over two hundred wells with associated power lines, roads, and pipelines though several isolated valleys. The Goshute Tribe believes that this water that they depend on for their agricultural and cultural livelihoods will “dry up” if the project is approved.
